Ranking by RUGBY15

Position 1 will be determined by outcome of Grey College vs Affies in Bloemfontein next weekend.

KES is climbing the Ranks nicely but Boishaai still could enter top5 if they win against a top team, team much stronger since the touring squad back from overseas.

Florida had impressive win over Monument, also brining nicely into the Top10.

    • Morgan Piek says:

      Hi David

I saw your comment on Rugby15. Its incredibly difficult to make do something very acurate in South Africa, because some areas are much better than other with school rugby. For example Grey College has nobody in the entire Free State or Northern Cape that can compete with them. the Bloem schools refuse to play them unless a game gets called off once Grey has a 50 point lead. So whats happening is Grey play against Fichardtpark for example, and the game is stopped 20-30 minutes into the game.

Thus are forced to play stronger teams from other parts on SA.

What I can tell you is, we having been working on a new school rugby sites, that will built up a data base of the all the schools and players etc. It will be somewant interactive so approved people from smaller schools can update things. It will still be monitored by us for quality controle purposes.

I believe once that is up and running, and working correctly, we will be able to give more accurate logs of the tops schools, and hopefully, some sort of formal top schools league can be started in South Africa.

Thanks a lot for your input,

      Kind regards,

      Morgan

how is it possible that oakdale could be 40th when they beat paul roos twice as well as outiniqua and a few others above them?

The latest Top 60 is out, please send us your school results & fixtures to media@SchoolRugby.co.za

  20. Sibulele says:

Selborne played grey bloem and drew with them 16all. So i don’t understand when u say u don’t think we good enough to be there. Another thing about these rankings is that later on the season it will be impossible for our boys to stay on top since they don’t play against most of the schools in the top ten. But there is a super league for such schools that are consistent. So i understand. Thanks for the great work guys. Its awesome and our boys are excited about this.

  21. Rick says:

Where can I see the TOP 100 schools, or all the schools rating?

  22. Elliot says:

Just a suggestion as they are pretty close to yours. Anyway how come is Pretoria Boys so high up rumour has it that their seconds beat them in a practice match last week?

    • Well they did thus far the best against Affies, also team practice matches u don’t play to win, u play to get the tactical elements of your game tops. The 2nd team players usually play these games with passion. but I cam assure you if they has to play a serious match between 1st and 2nds of PBHS it would end up with 50point win

  23. newnham says:

Keegan – you are delusional if you think St Albans should be on that list . I’m also not sure why St Johns deserve to be there at all – they got a hiding from Millfield (UK) at the easter festival and Millfield in turn were beaten by Daniel Pienaar who aren’t on the list (and probably shouldn’t be . KES seem about right at number 5 – beating maritzburg College at Goldstones takes some doing this year , or any year in fact . Westville should be around 15th , and St Stithians , St Andrews (beaten 57-18 by Maritzburg) , Graeme and DHS should be below Hilton and Michaelhouse . Glenwood seem a little high , they are roughly on a par with Kearsney as Saturday showed , and you would expect Maritzburg College to beat them this year . This week will decide the no 1 spot between Afiies and GCB – my money would be on Affies at the moment .

    • Thx for your input, this is quality comments by you, it helps us allot if the public participates in these rankings as well. many changes expected this wknd to the ranks. These ranks & any other ranks in SA are not official, pure speculation, we trying to add the element of fans that assist with rank suggestions with quality responses like you made to justify certain positions that are still not 100% in place

  24. keegan says:

@ derek it was a union ref and I thought they deserved to win

  25. Fred says:

some schools so called big rugby schools tend to avoid playing schools like noordkaap who has not lost a game this season .Affies are prepared to travel to Kimberley in June , i hope Grey takes note!

    • Yes Noord Kaap been good, but they must beat top teams like Waterkloof, Monument, Selborne, KES, Affies & Grey PE, Grey College every year. Not only when they have a good team.

I’m sure if they beat Affies then Grey will tale note of them. Affies is just a top class team, can’t see how Noord Kaap can beat them thou

  26. derek says:

King edward shouldn’t be in top 10,Dale College beat them few weeks back and @Keegan St Stithians always win the main game at the fest due to biased refs!

  27. Ben says:

Ok …. I do agree with you about tho top teams not playing against all the others , Such a compitition would have more games that the super 15. However Westville BHS did beat DHS(31) and Kersney(15) .

  28. keegan says:

Where’s st albans on the list

  29. keegan says:

How is queens above saints when saints beat them at saints fest

  30. Barry says:

Les – as a Glenwood boy I agree with you Westvile should feature in top 15 at least

  31. Hooterman says:

First time I have come across your site…..thanks for all this great information. Do you by any chance have records of the schools fixture lists for 2011?

  32. Elliot says:

Thanks for these rankings. Ja it is a pretty hard job as they are not in a league. Perhaps you could have a chat with another site sa school sports who publish rankings too. Apparently theirs are based on some formula. Pooling ideas together could get us closer to what is accurate. I think after the top ten it is always going to be difficult to seperate teams 11 -30 they are all pretty close.

    • We don’t believe in their formula at all, no formula can work, impossible, all TOP 10 schools don’t play one another.

One will have to manage it manually each week

    • Morgan says:

      Good Morning.

It’s a pleasure, it is a hard job that isn’t based on an exact science. The biggest problem is there isn’t a league system in South Africa. It’s more or less baes on the principal that the stronger schools for example Grey don’t play agaisnt other schools in Bloemfontein. They schools simplity aren’t strong enough to play them. They play other schools across the country. Grey do play the other schools in the Free State but it’s their 2nd & 3rd teams that play the other schools first teams.
I know for fact that even Maritzburg College refuse to play Grey because of their strength. It was an annual fixture.

In the Cape for example there are so many schools that the leagues get worked out according to the schools size. So some years you have a school with 300-400 pupils that are good and stronge enough to face a Paul Roos, Paarl Gym, Bishops. Unfortuanrely they don’t get that opportunity. Until SARU decides to implement a strong national school league system that can carry 30-50 teams we have to look at the 30 odd school with the strongest and well known rugby traditions and keep and eye on them. Your top 10 will always remain more or less intact with one with one or two dropping out and coming back the next year. The schools history does play a big part. We have been monitoring the seasons results of the top schools and we base our movement on that. For people to accuse us of sucking things out of thumbs is unfair and based on nothing considering we have corrospondents in al the major centres and we invest heavily in attending as many games as possible to give you the most accurate possible rankings.

We also judge it on historicially weaker schools beating big schools. It’s happened a lot this season hence our ranking looking a little contavercial.
For example Diamantveld frm Kimberley thrashed Boland Landbou 53-19. We do however keep an eye on sites like you mentioned. I don’t know if you’ve seen that it is out dated?

Thank you for your input and I hope I could clear some things up a little.

      Kind Regards

Grey pe nr7…paul roos nr 20??Paul roos has beaten grey ?just asking

    • Yes but Paul Roos lost many, but PRG will get back in T10 once they start beating the T10 ranked teams

    • Morgan says:

      Good Morning.

Paul Roos in one of thee great rugby insitution in South Africa. Sadly they aren’t doing well at the moment. Last week they got trashed 48-10 by Waterkloof and two days later lost to an equally out of form Glenwood 13-8. I witnessed this myself as we were at the Wildeklawer Rugby Fesitval. Those two losses and a draw this weekend to Rondebosch didn’t help their cause. Once they get over their injuries and get their rythem going I’m sure they will start climbing up the ranking to where they’re meant to be.

Paul Roos was the last team to beat Grey and that happened back in 2009 at Paul Roos 9-3.

Thank you for all your support and interest.

As a former kes boy im chuffed, we’ve dominated jhb schools for far too long now without due credit, i do know there’l b murmurs outhere about our position but its still early days and i reckon we can beat a few ‘big’ names b4 season ends, cmon the reds! Nelio thanx 4 the goodwork and if u dont mind, who do u think will make top10 come end of the season?..

  35. WesKaap says:

@nelio Thanks but no need to be so sensitive. These types of rankings will always be subjective but you need to be more transparent in how you manage to come up with these rankings. I have followed school rugga for 25 years and realise it is not possible to be accurate. You put up rankings please expect to be challenged and resist the tendency to take offense

    • no offense taken, just appreciate some effort we make to bring school rugby to you, we want the public to engage and support us to get the most accurate estimated T40. mathematicaly you cant build a system as they dont all compete against one another, only schools like Affies, Grey College, Paul Roos Gym take on the best of the best. the day the implement a league for T20 or so, then everything will be resolved.

currently we take in consideration performance, also keeping in mind last year performance which allows the ranking to start fair and then to end correct by end of year. thx for your support

  36. etienne says:

Thanks for taking the time to do these rankings. It’s a very difficult job to do.

  37. les says:

I’m a ex Westville boys high, I thought they might in the top 15 at the very least. But never-the-less I appreciate your work and keeping us informed. Great job, keep it up.

  38. Cobus says:

On what basis do you determine these rankings? coz I just can’t see paarl gym being 15 places below selborne… not said in a bad manner, would just like to know. coz I bet paarl gym and paul roos crush atleast 4 or 5 of those schools in the top 10… and didn’t affies already beat grey this year?

    • Grey playing Affies next week, Grey only lost 2009 against Paul Roos (10 SA u18 players didnt play that day for Grey because of u18 International matches playe same day) Grey unbeaten 27 consecutive games, lost only once in 73 consecutive matches.

Paarl Gym and Boys High was thrashed by Waterkloof and Affies.

The log will change every week, should be totally correct a week or two after cravenweek.

remember these logs are not official, can only have official points log if the top40 play all against one another in an official league.

Paarl Boys has their full strength team now back from abroad, that will also change things allot.

Selborne, Grey & Affies have not been beaten this year yet.

  39. WesKaap says:

Agree with your top three but the rest is a thumb suck!
