With their first Vodacom Cup match under their belt, the Border Bulldogs face their provincial neighbours, The EP Kings, in a ‘sibling rivalry’ match this Friday, the 27th of March on home turf. Yesterday, at an interactive press briefing, Mr Monde Tabata, Border Rugby Administrator, proudly announced a number of sponsors & partners that have pledged their support to Border Rugby for the new rugby season.
Flya Sportswear have come on board as exclusive official apparel sponsors for the 2015 & 2016 seasons and Mr Tabata introduced the new yellow & red jersey &kit. When asked about the significance of the colours & design of the new jersey, Akhona Mgijima, Border Rugby’s Commercial and Marketing specialist who is championing the campaign, explained that the yellow signified the bright future of,& the dawn of a new era of Border Rugby. The red ties in the anti-drugs campaign with the danger of drug use in teens & young adults – a cause which the Bulldogs are representing. The blood droplets on the jersey represent the blood, sweat & tears of dedication by the players, coaches & the union to get Border Rugby back on top, to champion status as well as the tears shed by parents over the death of their children due to drug abuse. The bricks on the back of the jersey signify the building of a new team, a new, improved union& the building of communities through playing rugby.
Mr Tabata also proudly announced that South African Breweries’ Russell Bennett, a former Border & Springbok player, had pledged sponsorship from the Castle brand to Border Rugby and that Coca-Cola had committed itself as exclusive beverage sponsor in the form of the Powerade brand. He said that it was encouraging to have such big brand sponsors such these on board as it has confirmed sponsor confidence inBorderRugby and would, in turn, also encourage supporter confidence in the union.
One of the main aims of Border Rugby is to encourage the younger generation in the area to support their local team. This week, the team will be holding two coaching clinics as well as visiting a number of schools in the area before their match on Friday. They will be promoting the Bulldogs brand & using these visits as “meet & greet” sessions so that youngsters have the opportunity to get to know the players. “We want the kids to have pride in their team and for this to happen, they need to get to know about the history & rich heritage of Border Rugby”, said Mr Tabata. He said these school visits would be an excellent outlet to achieve this.
And the new Border Rugby slogan, “Yes, We Can”, is a message to Border supporters that Border Rugby have the expertise, the talent and the determination to win…
The Border Bulldogs take on the EP Kings at the BCM Stadium in East London and the game starts at 19h10.
