The Absa Currie Cup will reach an exciting climax on Saturday when DHL Western Province host the Sharks at DHL Newlands. This competition has always been a symbol of pride and passion, steeped in history and traditional rivalry and this all culminates on Saturday when the teams take to the field to earn the right to be called champions.

Absa is the longest standing supporter of rugby in the country and the team sponsor of the Springboks has also been involved with the biggest and oldest domestic competition in the world for over 28 years.

“The 2013 Absa Currie Cup again produced exactly what we’ve come to expect from this premier rugby competition – a true showcase of the up and coming young talent we have in the country and the unmatched provincial rivalry and passion. As the proud sponsors of the Absa Currie Cup, we look forward to an exciting finale in what has been another memorable season.” [Bobby Malabie – Group Executive: Marketing, Communications, Citizenship and Public Affairs for Barclays Africa]

2013 will also be the first time that the finalists in all divisions of the competition will share in a new R5m prize fund. The newly crowned Absa Currie Cup Premier Division champions will walk away with a winner’s cheque of R1,8 million, with R200 000 going to their Academy structures, while the runners up will be awarded R1,2 million.

This year’s winners will also be able to lift a refurbished trophy, which has been restored to its original glory of 1891. Before the start of the season, the Cup was returned to Garrard of London, the Crown Jewellers, from whose workshops it had first emerged and the trophy given back its golden sheen.

Fans can also look forward to the following activities on match day:

· The legendary Johnny Clegg will be performing ahead of the titanic clash
· 2 lucky fans, from the Sharks or Western Province respectively, will be given the once in a lifetime opportunity to carry the trophy onto the field when their team is crowned champions
· Fans are encouraged to visit one of the two Absa photo booths where their pictures will be superimposed onto an action photo with their team as a keepsake from the 2013 Absa Currie Cup Final. These can be found in the Supporter Village on Boundary Rd or the SAB Fields on Boundary Road
· Absa Platinum customers stand the chance to be rewarded with a “VIP Hospitality experience” upgrade upon presentation of their Absa Platinum bank cards at the photo booth.
· In Durban, Sharks fans can rally behind their team at the Absa Currie Cup Final Fan Day at Suncoast Casino on Saturday from 15:30. There will be big screens, prizes on offer and entertainment for the kids. Entrance is free but space is limited and fans should be there early to secure a place for the fun-filled event.
