Affies outclass KES

Loading...Affies made it six wins to zero when the beat KES is the Premier Interschools derby match on Saturday 17th May. The scoreline of 38-10 suggest Affies won easily, but they did not have it all their own way and had to fight for every point. They struck early on in the 3rd minute when Vic Meyer, son of Springbok coach Heyneke, went over after a good recycle when he carried the ball up to the KES goal line. Flyhalf Eddie Fouche converted and Affies were 7-0 up.
KES opted for an attacking line-out after a penalty and after a repeat infringement from Affies , Tony de Zorzi slotted the penalty to make the score 10-3 for Affies. From repeated Affie attacks, wing Tiaan Schmullian scored in the corner. Again Fouche converted and Affies went 14-3 up.
On halftime KES scrumhalf Nkosano Mathaba sold a dummy and as he went over the line, lost the ball in the tackle from DP du Plessis and Eduan Lubbe. This kept the halftime score at 14-3 to Affies.
Affies attacked early the second half and their mecurial fullback Eduan Keyter was held up over the line after a great solo run. From the resulting scrum they bashed at the line till their captain Ruan Roelofse burst through three defenders to score. 21-3 after 49 minutes and three minutes later it was 24-3 with a penalty by Eddie Fouché.
KES did not have enough good ball to launch attacks and they looked down and out at this stage. A penalty gave them an attacking line-out. They mauled and then hooker Willem du Plessis forced his way through for a well deserved try. Brad Naudé converted and Affies led 24-10 after 56 minutes.
A stray pass hit wing Tiaan Schmullian’s knee and in the resulting chase, KES was disposed of the ball and Henco Jordaan scored. Fouche converted again. 31-10 to Affies.
KES left wing Mangobo Mbatha then produced not one but two try saving tackles when he first tackled Henco Jordaan from behind and then tackled prop DP du Plessis inched from the line.
An ill-timed grubber from KES landed in the hands of Keyter on the halfway line and the classy fullback put on the afterburners and outran the opposition to score in the right hand corner. Fouche duly converted and with the score at 38-10 the final whistle blew.
The match was an excellent example of the spirit in which schoolboy rugby should be played.
