Affies v Glenwood

Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool shrugged of a shaky start to finish their rugby season on a high note when they beat Glenwood from Durban 54-32 in a very entertaining match in Pretoria.

The boys from Glenwood made sure there was an awesome atmosphere. Their marching band played memorable tunes and the boys chanted along to the beat of the drums until the final whistle blew.

Affies started of poorly and were trailing 10-0 after only 6minutes of play. They allowed the big Glenwood pack to dominate them at the breakdown and poor lineouts kept them under serious pressure for the first 15minutes.

Affies slowly but surely started settling down and started getting some decent phases together. It wasn’t long before Affies scored an awesome backline try of their own, and a penalty to level the score.

The referee also started penalising Glenwood heavily at the breakdown and Affies waisted no time in scoring another try to take a lead that didn’t last long. Glenwood left winger S. Tom dove over in the corner after Affies spilled the ball in a backline move and it was kicked through.

Both teams’ number 8’s crossed over for tries just before half-time, with only a successful conversion the difference between the two sides. Glenwood leading 22-20 at half-time.

At the break it was Affies that got a stern talking to from the coaches while Glenwood grouped together and encouraged each other..

Affies started the second half in similar fashion to the first, with basic errors and poor decisions putting them under serious pressure on their own line. Glenwood converted one penalty but missed another while pinning Affies back in their own 22 for the first ten minutes.

Affies sharpened up their defense and kept the ball tighter while Glenwood started making numerous errors under pressure, allowing Affies to score two tries in less than three minutes.

Glenwood, not wanting the game to get away from them, struck back immediately through a well constructed try by the Glenwood forward pack, and leveling the scores at 32-32 with 18minutes remaining.

After the last Glenwood try it was all Affies. Their forward pack, led by hooker and captain Pepler Stander started dominating the collisions, breaking the Glenwood defensive line with ease and forcing turnovers at most rucks.

Affies ran in for a further two tries and a penalty conversion to take a handsome lead of 49-32 with little time left on the clock. But Affies captain Stander finished their season in style when he took a ball on the wing, sprinted down the touchline and powered over no less than three Glenwood defenders to miraculously stay in field and dot the ball down in the corner.

Flyhalf Rudi “Poenie” van Rooyen failed with the conversion but nonetheless earned the nod from Rugby15 for unofficial Man-Of-The-Match with his contribution of 24 points.
