On Wednesday some in New Zealand continued to mock Springbok rugby and especially Springbok coach Peter de Villiers in an article published by columnist Wynne Gray for the New Zealand Herald.

On the front page of the Auckland edition was a picture of All Black captain Richie McCaw standing victoriously and the headline read “ALL BLACKS’ WORLD CUP BONUS – Springboks reappoint coach”

It’s obvious from the article that Gray and the rest of New Zealand are extremely happy with the outcome of SARU’s Springbok season review in which De Villiers and his whole management team got retained until further notice.

Whether they are mocking the Boks or truly fearful of a full strength Springbok squad is up to your own interpretation.

The article mentions all of the De Villiers apparent shortcomings and all of the wrong reasons why De Villiers and his team made the headlines this year.

According the Gray, SARU just handed New Zealand the World Cup on a silver platter and he goes as far as to encourage all other nations to “Raise a glass to the good fortune of P Divvy” and to ‘cut him some slack and just enjoy the journey”.

Here is an extract from the article:

“Why would New Zealand and Australia want a struggling Springbok coach removed? P Divvy is the best ally the Tri-Nations sides have for next year’s series and subsequent World Cup.
Fortunately SARU came to the same conclusion. De Villiers will be in charge of the Boks on their end-of-year tour and unless there is a massive meltdown on that trip, he will be in charge for the seventh World Cup in New Zealand.”

Expect to see more of these type of articles unless De Villiers and his team can make a serious improvement and statement on the end-of-year tour this November.  Or worst case scenario SARU steps in and replaces the whole management team.
