The SA U20s secured their first victory on their three-match Argentinean tour following their 46-29 win over the Argentina U20s at the Lawn Tennis Club in Santiago del Estero on Saturday night.

Both teams played an expansive and attacking brand of rugby and entertained the 5000 crowd which saw 10 tries scored in this match. The Baby Boks ran in six five-pointers to the four scored by the hosts.

SA U20 tour captain and No.8 Arno Botha notched up a brace while the tourists other tries were scored by centre Bradley Moolman, prop Stephan Kotze, winger Courtnall Skosan and fullback Riaan Britz. Flyhalf Johan Goosen enjoyed a solid kicking performance for the Baby Boks and notched up five conversions and two penalties to end the game with a personal points’ haul of 16.

The hosts’ tries were achieved by captain and flyhalf Brian Ormson, No.8 Miguel Urtubey and centres Matías Orlando and Jerónimo De la Fuente. Ormson kicked three conversions and a penalty.

“We’re happy to achieve our first win on tour, but there’s still a lot of hard work that lies ahead if we intend to achieve our goal of winning both international friendlies on this tour,” said SA U20 coach Dawie Theron.

“The result is a good one, but the score difference is not something that we are going to be focusing too much on as we prepare for the second international.  For us as a team, it’s about building as a squad and gaining valuable experience of playing against foreign opposition in our build up to the IRB Junior World Championship in Italy in three months.”

The Baby Boks conceded three tries in the first half which saw the hosts enjoy a 21-10 lead at the break. Goosen added the tourists first points thanks to a penalty kick and converted Moolman’s try.

In the second half, the SA U20s played with more freedom and were rewarded with five tries which were thanks to the efforts of Botha (2), Britz, Skosan and Kotze.
