Vodacom Bulls winger Bjorn Basson underwent surgery in New Zealand on Sunday after he sustained a tear to his intestines during his side’s 28-13 loss to the Crusaders in Christchurch on Saturday.

Basson was forced off the field during the first half of the play-off match, the third injury the visitors sustained in the opening forty minutes.

He was operated upon at 03h00 Sunday morning (NZ time).

Basson will remain in hospital for at least another five days and will have to stay in New Zealand for five more days before he will be able to fly long haul, Blue Bulls Company CEO Barend van Graan confirmed on Sunday.

“Our team doctor, Org Strauss, stayed behind to look after Bjorn when the rest of the squad departed for home via Sydney,” Van Graan confirmed.

“We have informed his wife of his injury which will keep him off the field for at least six weeks.”

The Bulls will arrive back in Johannesburg on Monday at 16h15.

Medical updates will be provided as they become available.
