The Springbok Women’s Sevens on Monday departed for Canada for the fourth leg of the Women’s World Series with high hopes of delivering better results than that in Dubai, Brazil and Atlanta as the second half of the competition kicks off.

Only three tournaments remain on the Women’s World Series including the Canada leg, and the Springbok Women’s Sevens have a big mountain to climb to keep alive hopes of working their way into the top nine on the log to keep alive hopes of retaining their place on the World Series next season. They are currently in 11th place on the log.

South Africa will face hosts Canada, the USA and Russia in the tournament, which will again provide a tough test as the teams are placed in second, fifth and seventh place on the log table respectively.

“We have been working hard to improve the quality of all aspects of our game since arriving back from Atlanta and hopefully that will show in our performances,” said Springbok Women’s Sevens coach Renfred Dazel. “We realise we are under pressure to perform after letting ourselves down in the first three tournaments, but that said we always knew our first season on the circuit would be challenging. The important thing for us now is to use the lessons we have learned in the first half of the competition and transfer that into positives on the field.”

Dazel said the team’s defence was one of the main areas that had to improve going forward.

“Our defence has been sub-standard and inconsistent up to now, so we have invested a lot of time and energy in that area and hopefully we will see an improvement,” said the coach. “We also have to be more accurate at converting our try-scoring chances into points because we have created a series of attacking opportunities, but we have battled to use them.”

The team will fly to Victoria, Canada, via London, and will touch down on Tuesday evening local time.
