The Springbok Women’s Sevens will step up their preparations this week for tournaments in March and April with a series of matches against a Sevens Invitational squad in Stellenbosch.

Fifteen provincial players were invited to Stellenbosch for the five-day camp, which kicked off on Tuesday and concludes on Saturday.

The squad includes Tyler Botha, who played for the SA Select team in the Hong Kong Invitational last season, and a handful of players who attended the women’s 15s training camp in Cape Town in October last year.

The squad gathered in Stellenbosch on Tuesday, and have a string of training sessions lined up until Thursday, before meeting the Springbok Women’s Sevens players in matches on Friday and Saturday respectively.

Each team will be divided into two groups, with the sides battling it out with one another to assist the Springbok Women’s Sevens squad with their preparations for the Vancouver Rugby Festival on 9 and 10 March and the World Series Qualifier in Hong Kong on 6 and 7 April.

“We have two very important tournaments ahead, so these matches will be vital to get us match fit, put that which we have been working on at training into practice and to test player combinations,” said Springbok Women’s Sevens coach Renfred Dazel.

“We have to win the World Series Qualifier to play as a core team on the 2017/2018 circuit, so we have to make the most of every opportunity to achieve this.

“The players have been working hard on the game plans and their conditioning since January, and they are very excited to work in some game time, so hopefully we will achieve the objectives we set out for the camp.”
