The Boland Cavaliers will be looking to bounce back after a narrow 23-21 loss to Western Province in a Supersport Rugby Challenge encounter that took place at the Newlands Rugby Stadium this past Saturday.

The Cavaliers have their sights set on another Western Cape derby as they’ll be facing the SWD Eagles at the Boland Stadium in Wellington this coming Saturday (12 May 2018). The match is scheduled to kick-off at 14:00.

The Cavaliers were unfortunate not to record a win against WP, losing through a late penalty kick in the last few minutes of the match. Even though WP were clinical in their performance, especially during the first half, the visiting Cavaliers showed massive character by clawing their way back into the match after trailing 15-0 at half-time.

Just as victory seemed certain for WP supporters, Boland drew first blood early in the second half when blind side flanker Ludio Williams crossed the try-line for a five-pointer, which was converted by fullback Jacquin Jansen.

The two teams continued to exchange blows throughout the match. WP wing Edwill van der Merwe scored an unconverted try in the 52nd minute, but Boland reacted shortly thereafter with a try through scrum-half Jovelian de Koker in the 57th minute. Replacement flyhalf Elgar Watts converted De Koker’s try to narrow the gap to just six points (20-14) with a quarter of the match still to be played.

Boland continued to dominate most of the second half and finally got their noses in front when left wing Valentino Wellman scored in the 72nd minute of the match. Watts slotted the conversion to make the score 20-21 in favour of the Cavaliers.

WP piled on the pressure in the final minutes and managed to force a late penalty within kicking range, which was slotted by flyhalf Josh Stander for the win.

Even though they lost, Boland can take a lot of positives into their upcoming match with the SWD Eagles. With no lack of effort from the players and a clearly well-executed game plan, better composure in both halves of the match should see the team challenge SWD for the second spot on the Southern section of the Supersport Rugby Challenge log (behind Western Province).
