BOLAND LANDBOU Vs OAKDALE LANDBOU HISTORIC OVERVIEW

Date: 18 August Kick-off: 12h10 Channel: SS 10

Historic Overview

The penultimate game of this season’s Premier Interschools derby’s takes place on Saturday 18 August when Boland Landbou hosts fellow agricultural school Oakdale Landbou from Riversdale for their annual interschools. The two schools have been playing each other on yearly basis since 1992 and this year they will meet for the 26th time. The first couple of matches were very close and home ground advantage was a huge factor. It was only in 2001 that an away team won for the first time when Boland Landbou, with a Derick Hougaard at pivot, took the honours 15-0 in Riversdale.

For the next 8 years Boland dominated the Interschools and Oakdale could only win once in 2005 with the score of 8-6 in a very hard-fought game in Riversdale. The 2009 Interschools to be held at Oakdale was abandoned due to flooded fields. The last 6 years went according to home ground advantage, but this trend might be broken in 2018 as Oakdale are the favourites to win based on their performances throughout the year. Currently Boland holds the overall upper hand by winning 15 of the games while Oakdale have won 9 with one draw.

Current Season:

Boland started their season with much promise when the obliterated a very highly rated Menlo Park in their opening game at the Loftus festival in March. They however went on to lose both their next games to visitors Garsfontein and then to Monument at the North-South festival. They then bounced back again with two good wins at the Paarl Boys 150 festival and a further two against Brackcenfell and Rondebosch.  Their season seemed to be back on track but losses against Affies, Wynberg and Framesby put the brakes on again. They have the knack to lose games they should win and vice versa. Against a very good Paul Roos, they gave the home team a run for their money in one of Paul Roos’s closest games yet. The Boland Landbou team that will pitch for the interschools derby is however one not be taken lightly and can surprize any team no matter what their form.

Boland provided three players to the WP Craven Week teams in Darren Hendricks, Thys Kitshoff and Eric Lambrecht. Darren was also picked to represent SA Schools.

Oakdale on the other hand is having one of their best seasons to date and have only lost two games thus far to top ranked teams Paul Roos and Paarl Gim.  They eventually broke the draught on Brug street this year for their first win in many years against Paarl Boys High. They also ruled the roost in SWD by beating arch rivals Outeniqua in their yearly derby and obliterated fellow agricultural school Marlow in Cradock.

It was therefore no surprise to see 14 of their team represent the SWD at Craven week in the annual tournament held this year at Paarl Boys High. Clyde Lewis, Johannes Klinck, Henco Beukes, Hannes Gous, Joaquin Taute, Etienne Steyn, JD Strydom, Derick Jooste, Pierre Uys, Pieter Maritz, Keano Hendricks, Magnus Muller, Vernon Paulo, and Trevino Gordon all wore the SWD colours during the week.

Rugby at HOër LANDBOUSKOOL BOLAND

Boland Landbou rugby produced their first Springbok in 1984 when prop Attie Strauss was picked for the tests between South Africa and the South American Jaguars.  They produced a further 3 Boks in Lock Hottie Louw (2002), Prop Deon Carstens (2002) and Flyhalf Derick Hougaard (2003). The latter becoming the darling of Loftus and the Blue Bulls with his match winning boot in the mould of their beloved Naas Botha. Old boys Hottie Louw and Deon Carstens have returned to help their Alma Mater in matters of rugby and both have coaching roles at the school.  It is indeed great to see that they are ploughing their experience back into the school and its learners.
