Border Rugby Union has appointed Thobile Mtya as the new Talent Identification Officer. The Springbok legends appointment is motivated by his admirable work in developing and nurturing young talent. In his illustrious rugby career he has coached various provincial teams that include Border Urban and Border Womens. As a coach he managed to produce a number of Springboks ladies representatives, which went on to represent the country on international level.

Thobile Mtya has had a massive contribution to the development of rugby in the province, as he was contributory in the selection of the current Border u19 and u21 teams. He has been instrumental in ensuring Border Rugby is well represented in the u15 Iqhawe Week, a programme by the SA Rugby Legends to ensure development of rugby in disadvantaged schools and communities. He coached at Walter Sisulu University where he stabilized rugby in the University and mentored talents such as Lwazi Mvovo, who is currently in the Springbok World Cup preliminary squad to England.

As a player Thobile Mtya a hard tackling flanker in his days, played for Swallows RFC, Mdantsane Rugby Union, Border Rugby Union, Border Aloes and South African Rugby Union XV. Born in Kwelera, he became the first black player to play for Border Rugby Football Union after unity in 1992.

He is tasked with a responsibility to visit schools, towns and villages in order to establish linkages and relationships with relevant persons and businesses. His appointment indicates how serious Border Rugby takes development and fostering transformation.
