Four Canterbury players have been selected in the Black Ferns squad to play in the International Women’s Rugby Series in June. The squad of 26 will play a four-Test series against Australia, Samoa and Canada.

Canterbury Women’s Head Coach John Sherratt said the four players included in the squad from Canterbury are all hugely talented and deserving selections.

“There are two forwards and two backs from Canterbury in the mix. Canterbury Captain Stephanie Te Ohaere-Fox is one of four props in the squad and will bring a huge amount of experience and physicality to the side.

“Loose forward Casey Robertson is another player with massive experience, having played for the Black Ferns for more than a decade, earning three Women’s Rugby World Cups in that time and captaining the side against England in 2011.

“In the back line is halfback Kendra Cocksedge and midfielder Amiria Rule. Kendra was last year’s top individual point scorer in the women’s National Provincial Championship, while Amiria was the joint-leading try-scorer, so both will be great assets to the team. It is great to see that Amiria will also pick up the vice-captaincy,” Sherratt said.

All four women have been involved in the Black Ferns previously, and all except Rule were in the 2010 World Champion squad.

Canterbury Rugby CEO Hamish Riach said these players have already contributed a huge amount to Women’s Rugby in New Zealand and Canterbury and will no doubt continue to do so.

“These are some of the best women’s rugby players in the world. They all have incredibly impressive careers already and their involvement in this year’s International Series shows that they have plenty more to give yet. Congratulations to all of them from all of us at Canterbury Rugby,” Mr Riach said.

The International Series will be played in Auckland and Bay of Plenty in June and the Women’s Rugby World Cup squad will be announced following that series.
