Blitzbok Francois Hougaard has been praised after giving his Olympic bronze medal to injured team-mate Seabelo Senatla.

Senatla, a key member of South Africa’s Sevens side over the last three years, was not one of the 12 players who received a bronze medal after he injured his wrist in the quarter-final win over Australia.

Hougaard replaced Senatla for the semi-final and bronze match play-off, and after the medal ceremony Senatla toldSport24 Hougaard offered him his bronze medal.

“It’s only fair. If the other guys come in it means that my name is taken off the list and they have to be there,” he said.

“Hougie (Hougaard) wanted to give it to me … I was like ‘No, no … you keep it. Your name is on the list.

“He’s a very good guy and he wanted to give it to me. It’s a procedure so I only think it’s right. It doesn’t matter how much time I got or how much time he played … at the end of the day that’s how it went.”

Hougaard took to social media shortly after the match to write that he did indeed give Senatla his medal as he “deserved it more”.

Meanwhile South African captain Kyle Brown has been included in the Rio Dream Team. The other players who made the team is three members of the gold medal-winning Fijian side – Osea Kolinisau, Semi Kunatani and Josua Tuisova, as well as James Davies and Dan Bibby (Great Britain) and Lomano Lemeki (Japan).
