Western Province wins the North v South derby and remains unbeaten while the Lions record their first major victory against the Free State Cheetahs.

Friday 13 August, GRIQUAS 58 – 25 PUMAS, Kimberley (Half-time 22 – 20)

As we have become accustomed, the Griquas blitzed their opposition in the second half to totally outclass and outscore the Pumas 58-25 in Kimberley. The Pumas were only down two points at half-time and even scored the first try of the second half, but they clearly weren’t ready for the intensity with which the Griquas attacked in the final moments, running in five tries in less than 30 minutes.

Point scorers:

Griquas:

Tries: Cecil-John Kemp, Frikkie Spies, Riaan Viljoen (2), Rocco Jansen, Rudi Vogt, Sarel Pretorius (2)

Conversions: Naas Olivier (6)

Friday 13 August, LEOPARDS 6 – 51 SHARKS, Rustenburg (Half-time 6 – 32)

It was pure class as the Sharks scored seven tries against an errant Leopards side to record a 51-6 victory at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg. The Leopards had their hands full with a well balanced Sharks loose-trio of Willem Alberts, Keegan Daniel and Jacques Botes, while Stefan Terblanche and Lwazi Mvovo ran circles around the Leopards defense.

Point Scorers:

Leopards:

Penalties: Neill Jacobs (2)

Sharks:

Saturday 14 August, LIONS 30 – 26 FS CHEETAHS, Johannesburg (Half-time 13 – 9)

The Lions are back to winning ways after they snatched victory in the final minutes against the Free State Cheetahs. With less than 10minutes remaining and trailing by 10 points, the Lions, led by young flyhalf Elton Jantjies, ran in two impressive tries against average Cheetahs defense to claim their first major victory in more than six months.

Point Scorers:

Lions:

Tries: Deon van Rensburg, Elton Jantjies, Jannie Boshoff

Conversions: Elton Jantjies (3)

Penalties: Elton Jantjies (3)

Saturday 14 August, WESTERN PROVINCE 15 – 12 BLUE BULLS, Cape Town (Half-time 6 – 3)

Although no tries were scored, the North v South derby was anything but boring and had the 48’000 Newlands faithful glued to their seats for the whole 80minutes. It was a battle of the boot with Willem de Waal against Jacques-Louis Potgieter. In the end De Waal edged Potgieter to guide WP to a 15-12 victory over the Blue Bulls and extend their unbeaten run in this year’s tournament.

Point Scorers:

Western Province:

Penalties: Willem de Waal (5)

Blue Bulls:
