Dazel impressed with talent at training camp

Loading...Springbok Women’s Sevens coach Renfred Dazel said he was pleased with the talent on display at their three-day training camp in Stellenbosch, which ended late on Saturday, and he hoped to see a few players stake a claim for a place in the team in future.
A group of 24 players selected at the SARU Interprovincial Sevens tournament in Nelspruit were invited to the camp where they underwent medical assessments and participated in fitness, speed and gym sessions.
They also played a series of matches with members of the Springbok Women’s Sevens squad to test their skills in a game situation.
The camp has already paid off with one of the participants, Chane Stadler, from Western Province, being invited to train with the Bok Women’s Sevens team from Monday. The player participated in her first field session with the team on Tuesday, and will be eligible for selection for the Emirates Airlines Dubai Rugby Sevens at the Sevens Stadium from 4 to 6 December.
Dazel hoped that another two players from the camp will be able to train with the squad later in the week, and should they join the squad, they too will be eligible for selection for the Dubai tournament.
“The camp went very well, and I am pleased with the talent that was on offer,” said Dazel. “The players gave their best throughout the camp and some of them showed that they have what it takes to compete at the highest level.
“We have already drawn Chane into the squad and we are looking at another two players as we look to increase our depth in players in the national set-up, and we are excited to see what they have to offer. They now know the high standards expected at training and they are aware of what it takes to become an elite athlete after spending a few days with us.”
Meanwhile, the Springbok Women’s Sevens squad have been training hard for the Emirates Airlines Dubai Rugby Sevens where the team will face the Canada Maple Leafs, Belgium Rugby Sevens and the Tabusoro Angels International in the pool stages.
“The players have been working hard since they returned to camp earlier this month and it is clear that they are excited to play in a tournament again after the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens Olympic Qualifier, which they won in September,” said Dazel. “Hopefully they can carry that impressive form into this tournament.”
The team will depart for Dubai on Sunday, 29 November with the tournament kicking off the following Friday, 4 December.
With the team having lost their core status on the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series, they are expected to participate in a series of International Invitational tournaments next season in Las Vegas, Vancouver, Hong Kong and Amsterdam in an attempt to play their way back onto the World Series for the 2016/2017 season.
