Debutants set to fire in Hong Kong

The Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens team have named seven new faces for Hong Kong with Andy Friend’s side focused on the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast the following weekend.

Olympian Con Foley returns to the Australian fold as does Sam Figg, with Australia’s next generation to take centre stage at the world famous tournament.

Australia are in Pool B alongside Spain, Canada and Kenya, who finished second in the most recent World Series event in Vancouver.

Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens coach Andy Friend said: “We set the Commonwealth Games as a key tournament at the start of the season so Hong Kong will be a great opportunity for some of our younger players to get some World Series experience.

“So many of these young guys have been working so hard for so long, so this is their chance to impress and there’s no bigger stage than Hong Kong.

“We have some quality players in our squad and it’s great to welcome back Con, who travelled with us to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

“Sam Figg is another who I have kept in close contact with. He’s a proven performer on the World Series and will be a cool head for the rest of the squad,” Friend said.

Four of the squad have featured during the 2017/18 HSBC Seven World Series while Brandon Quinn is the only player that will back-up for the Commonwealth Games.

Australia are currently fourth on the World Series standings as they sit eight points off New Zealand in third with four events left to play.

The Commonwealth Games squad will stay in camp in Sydney before heading up to the Gold Coast prior to competition on April 14.
