England will play Samoa in the Cup quarter-finals at the HSBC Hong Kong sevens (4.42am BST, live on Sky Sports).

Simon Amor’s side topped Pool D with a thrilling 28-22 victory over HSBC World Series leaders USA.

Harry Glover crossed first before Dan Norton continued his fine form in the tournament chipping over the top of the last defender before collecting his kick and dotting down while Phil Burgess added a third for 21-0.

Ben Pinkelman crossed twice before the break to reduce the score to 21-12 and he sealed his hat trick after half time to take the deficit to just four points.

Crucially though Kevon Williams was sin binned and Mike Ellery surged over from close-range with a minute left to play to win the game, despite a late score from Marcus Tupuola.

England’s tournament opened with a 36-19 victory over Wales.

Will Muir opened up the scoring for England by crossing the whitewash out wide before Wales responded through Joe Goodchild.

Wales’ momentum continued as Tom Rogers capitalised on a Welsh scrum which sent him under the posts before he went over for his second moments later, giving Wales a 12-point lead at half-time.

England flew into the second half as all-time leading try scorer Norton crossed, as he also became to highest ever try scorer at the Hong Kong Sevens, with Dan Bibby adding the extras to reduce the deficit.

Making his return from injury, Ellery powered down the wing to slide in before captain Burgess went over for one of his own to give England the lead.

Ellery’s form continued as he went for his second with Will Edwards going for one more in the final play of the game to seal victory.

England’s second pool game saw a comprehensive 54-5 win over Spain as the side scored eight tries on the way to victory, leading 28-0 at the break.

Two tries each for Edwards, Norton and Tom Bowen as well as a score each via Charlton Kerr and Muir sealed the win, with Spain crossing in the final play of the game through Javier De Juan.
