Simon Amor has named the England Sevens squad that will play in the Cathay Pacific HSBC Hong Kong Sevens on 6-8 April.

As the seventh stop on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, the three-day tournament takes place one week before Team England Sevens competes at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Captained by Will Edwards, the 12-man squad features Team England’s Alex Davis and Charlie Hayter alongside a number of the England Sevens’ academy talent.

Ben Howard and Ryan Olwofela who made their World Series debuts in Dubai and Sydney 2017 respectively are joined by Will Glover who joined the England Sevens programme in 2015/16, Charlton Kerr who debuted in Las Vegas last year and Callum Sirker who made his first appearance in an England jersey on the global circuit in Hong Kong 2017.

Charlie Spawforth, George Chatterton, Will Wilson and Charlie Kingham will make their World Series debuts in Hong Kong and will be supported by Fergus Guiry who will play the role of 13th man.

Drawn in Pool C England will face Scotland, South Korea and South Africa in the pool stages which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

“With the Commonwealth Games falling the weekend after Hong Kong we looked closely at the tournament results over the last couple of years and particularly the results after Hong Kong. To ensure our senior players who have played a lot of the World Series this season are mentally and physically fresh to give it their all for Team England at the Commonwealth Games, we have chosen to send a squad predominantly made up of our academy and university talent to Hong Kong. Alex Davis and Charlie Hayter will also get some invaluable game time ahead of joining up with the Team England squad.

“Hong Kong is such a prestigious event on the World Series circuit and will be a brilliant opportunity for our younger players. They will have some really tough competition but we are excited to see them show case their talent as they push on for further honours within England Sevens.”

England Sevens assistant coach Tony Roques will lead the side and will be supported by England Sevens academy coach Warren Abrahams.
