EASTERN Province U19 made it three wins out of three when they held on for a thrilling 13-10 victory against Western Province in the Absa U19 provincial competition at a wet Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday (July 25).
The match began in pouring rain and Western Province drew first blood through a try by prop by Michael Kumbirai, converted by flyhalf Aidynn Cupido, followed by a Cupido penalty to make it 10-0 in the 12th minute.
However, EP hit back with a penalty from flyhalf Michael Brink in the 22nd minute followed by a period of intense pressure which resulted in captain and centre Jeremy Ward diving over a ruck to score. Brink added the conversion to make it all square at the break.
The second half was a terrific battle in difficult conditions. Both sides had their chances, but the only points came from a well-struck penalty by Brink to give EP a narrow lead.
The game ended with WP putting in a desperate effort by running the ball from near their tryline, but eventually the conditions resulted in the inevitable knock-on and EP were able to scramble the ball to safety as the final hooter sounded.
The point-scorers were:
EP 13: try by Jeremy Ward; a conversion and two penalties by Michael Brink.
WP 10: try by Michael Kumbirai; a conversion and a penalty by Aydinn Cupido.
