Junior Springbok lock Jannes Kirsten will miss the rest of the IRB Junior World Championship (JWC) in France because of a facial injury, the team confirmed on Sunday.

Kirsten sustained a fractured cheek bone in the South Africa Under-20’s training session on Saturday afternoon at the Stade Michelin in Vannes.

The team will name a replacement shortly.

On Saturday evening SA U20 team doctor, Phatho Zondi, took Kirsten for a scan at a local hospital. According to Dr Zondi the CT scan confirmed a right infraorbital fracture with muscle impingement.

“He also has multiple fractures to the maxillary sinus. Jannes was consulted by an ENT specialist who confirmed the diagnosis of a Type B blowout fracture and has recommended conservative treatment with an expected return to play in a minimum of six weeks,” the team doctor explained.

Defending champions South Africa plays Wales in a semi-final clash on Tuesday at 16:45 in Vannes.

Meanwhile on Sunday, the squad continued with its preparations for the vital knockout match with two field sessions at the nearby Stade Michelin.

SA U20 coach, Dawie Theron, will announce the Junior Bok team to play Wales on Monday.
