Tim Gavin has been re-elected as President of the NSW Rugby Union.
The NSW legend, who represented the Waratahs on 83 occasions including 30 as captain, was elected for a further 12-month term at the NSW Rugby Union Annual General Meeting held at Moore Park on Monday.
A former Wallaby, Gavin played 47 Tests for Australia in a distinguished on-field career. Under the Union’s constitution, he will now spend a third and final year in the position, with fellow former NSW captain Mick Mathers continuing as Vice President.
In his report to the AGM, Gavin acknowledged the support of the Honorary Life Members and congratulated all affiliates on another successful year of community rugby in New South Wales. A moment was taken to remember two great men of New South Wales Rugby who passed away during 2013. Vale outstanding halfback and captain John Hipwell and NSW Schools administrator Ewart Robson.
Chairman Nick Farr-Jones thanked his Board, members and volunteers for their continued commitment to rugby across the state. Farr-Jones also congratulated NSW Honorary Life Member Robin Timmins, after she was presented with the International Rugby Board’s Development Award in Dublin in November 2013.
The members welcomed the endorsement of two Honorary Life Members to New South Wales Rugby. Terry Willis accepted his nomination for over 30 years of service to the Union as a Judicial Officer, including more than 20 years as Chairman of the NSWRU Judiciary. Former President Ron Graham was also endorsed as an Honorary Life Member, in recognition of his service to the Union as a player, administrator and ambassador.
NSWRU recorded a financial loss of $82,506 for the year ended December 31, 2013, attributed to a decrease in funding from Australian Rugby Union and increased property costs. NSW Rugby Union received payment from Waratahs Rugby Pty Ltd in the form of licensing fees totalling $1,083,278, which it distributed to the Union’s Affiliates to assist with administration, development and refereeing costs.
Executive Director Bruce Worboys thanked the Board, in particular Chairman Nick Farr-Jones and President Tim Gavin, for their tireless work for community rugby. He also acknowledged the efforts of the dedicated employees of NSWRU, Suburban and Country Rugby and NSW Referees.
