RUGBY: GLENWOOD VS HILTON

Glenwood hosted Hilton on Saturday, 11 May 2013 on a very wet and miserable day. Conditions were terrible due to the torrential rains that poured down the evening before causing the well prepared fields to look like a marshy swamp.

Hilton initially took ownership of the game and had a lot of possession in the first half. Hilton seemed to adapt quicker to the conditions and scored their first points through scrumhalf Cameron Wright in the 8th minute. Two minutes later saw Wright add another 3 points to the board and Hilton lead 6-0 until the 23rd minute when Glenwood’s fullback Corné Vermaak kicked a penalty taking the half time score to 6-3 in Hilton’s favour.

The second half saw a regrouped Glenwood side and they would have scored the first try of the match but due to the wet and slippery conditions knocked the ball on over the try line. Fortunately for Glenwood the referee was playing advantage and Vermaak was able to kick another 3 points over the goal posts. Both teams kicked over another 3 points taking the score to 9-9 with 10 minutes to go. As the game was looking to end in a draw some individual brilliance from Vermaak saw the first try of the match being scored. Hilton attacked straight away and was on the verge of the Glenwood try line where some excellent work by the Glenwood forwards saw a turnover ball which was fed to Vermaak who again created a massive gap. The ball was fed to centre Nkululeko Morné Joubert (14) who 10 meters out passed the ball back to Vermaak who scored a sensational try. Vermaak converted and the game ended 21-9 in Glenwood’s favour.

Vermaak can be pleased with himself after scoring all his team’s points from three penalties, two tries and a conversion. The sad news is that Vermaak has hurt ligaments in his neck and will be out of the game for at least a week.

The win summed up the day for Glenwood who celebrated a 100% win rate in the various age groups during the day.

Glenwood will be taking on tradition rivals, DHS on Saturday, 18 May 2013 at DHS.
