Glenwood vs. Garsfontein
It was a very physical start to the Pukke Festival for the Glenwood team as they took on Garsfontein Hoërskool from Pretoria. The physical approach caught the Glenwood team by surprise early on and the game turned into catch up rugby for most of the evening.
Garsfontein took a big early lead after Glenwood kicked away possession and they turned it into points, twice. Slipping vital one on one tackles the Glenwood team were 0-15 down within the first 20 minutes. Garsfontein extended that lead with a further 2 tries with 7 minutes to go to half time. Glenwood now 0-29 down just before half time started putting phases together and showing some character managed to score 3 tries in that very short time before halftime to narrow the score to 19-29 at the halftime break. Tries were scored by Akhona Nela, Wandi Mazibuko and Corné Vermaak with Kyle Gerhard converting 2 of the 3 tries.
Second half the Glenwood team would rather forget as we slipped a total of 27 tackles in total throughout the whole game with most of them happening in the second half. Poor commitment and lack of experience gave Garsfontein another 3 tries in the second half to extend the lead by 19 – 48.Glenwood managed a try late in the second half to take the final score to 26 – 48. The last try was scored by Nklululeko Mcuma and converted by Kyle Gerhard.
This is a young and probably the most inexperienced side we’ve had at first team level and they have a lot to learn as a team. There are no excuses for the poor technical aspects of the game but the boys are eager to improve and do their best, that’s all we need.

Glenwood vs. Drostdy HTS
After a very tough loss to Garsfontein and hard work on our off day the Glenwood boys were ready to face HTS Drostdy from Worcester (Cape Province). The team started brilliantly keeping the ball for long periods of attack and basically dominating possession. That all lead to an early 10 – 0 lead for Glenwood with Kyle Gerhard on target with a penalty and also scoring a great try that he converted. Drostdy launched big attacks with strong forward ball carriers but the Glenwood defence stood strong, a great improvement from the previous game. Drostdy was awarded a try when one of their players ran into his own player and spun out of the obstruction preventing the defence reaching him and scored, a clear obstruction was overseen by referee Tahla and Drostdy was back in the game, 10-7.Glenwood replied with a brilliant line break that centre Nkululeko Mcuma finished off by scoring under the poles to extend the lead to 17 – 7.On the stroke of half time the Drostdy fullback slotted a massive 60 metre kick to narrow the lead 17-10.
The second half started well with Glenwood left winger; Sphamandla Ngcobo out sprinting the field for a great try that Kyle Gerhard converted to extend the lead to 24 – 10. Glenwood let in 2 quick soft tries to allow Drostdy back into the game 24 – 22. Young prop Kenny van Niekerk crashed over from a close ruck to score a strong try that Kyle Gerhard once again converted 31 -22. Drostdy is a quality outfit that would never lie down and mauled from the line out to narrow the score to 31 – 29. With one and a half minutes left to play Glenwood was awarded a penalty 10 metre from the try line. What should have been an easy 3 points and surely a win for Glenwood as time was up turned into a nightmare as the Captain and team decided to run the ball. A tackle was made, the ball lost and the Drostdy winger ran all of 70 metres to score the try that would won them the game 31-34.
A very frustrating moment for the coaches and a very expensive lesson hopefully learnt by the team. We now have to bounce back and show that we are the talented and classy team as we have showed before at Kingspark Stadium against Framesby and College. There are a total of 6 players with previous experience in this team and they need to lead the other 17 talented team mates. I believe in the team and I believe we have the ability to do extremely well, from here its hard work, focus and faith in God and our God given talents as we get ready for 3 hard fixtures at the Kearsney Festival.
