Grey High School recorded their first victory since 2014 against Paul Roos Gimnasium in their annual Premier Interschools by 22-20 thanks to a late surge on their home ground in Port Elizabeth.

Grey’s replacement winger, Kholiwe Konza, scored with less than two minutes left in the match to draw scores level at 20-all. Flyhalf, LJ du Preez, kept his cool and slotted the conversion to give his side the victory.

In 2014 is was a penalty goal by Sharks flyhalf and Springbok prospect, Curwin Bosch, after the hooter which gave Grey High the victory over Paul Roos. This gave the team from Port Elizabeth a famous victory after having to come back from being 26 points down in the match to eventually walk off as victors with the scoreboard reading 27-26 in their favour.

Paul Roos took control in the first half after Grey High’s hooker, Ruan Jonker, was sin-binned by the referee, Phumzile Mbewu, after a dangerous tackle on Paul Roos’ captain and centre, Rufus Dercksen.

Paul Roos scored twice through winger Regan van der Westhuizen and Dercksen in the ten minutes that Jonker spent in the bin. Paul Roos went into half-time with a narrow 10-5 lead.

Mbewu also yellow carded the visitors’ eighth man, Matthew Cordy after he performed a neck-roll in the 30th minute of the clash. Grey High’s fightback only started in the 58th minute when centre Waqar Solaan grabbed the ball in front of Regan van der Westhuizen after a perfectly timed kicked by Runaldo Pedro.

He fielded a kick from Grey High’s scrumhalf, Runaldo Pedro, which was steered away from its initial target thanks to a Paul Roos’ hand that tried to charge the kick down. The ball landed in Engelbrecht’s hands who had too much pace and space available and finished his more than 40 meters run with almost no-one getting a hand on him.
