FNB UFH were aiming for a maiden win in 2016, in front of a home with a crowd. And they managed it in nail-biting fashion at the death against FNB UFH. It was a fairytale victory that could not come at a better time. It was a strong, physical encounter. FNB TUT drew first blood with a try early on by Apsalom Mthethwa just minutes into the match.

Both teams were desperate to ensure a victory, as they entered the clash without registering a win this season. FNB UFH scored on the stroke of half time though Asiphe Fihla to end the match at half time with scores at FNB TUT 8-5 FNB UFH.

It was going to take a lot of character to get a win, as both teams weren’t giving away points. It was flyhalf Lukas van Zyl that scored two to penalties to extend FNB TUT’s lead to 12-5. With minutes to play FNB UFH scored a try through Asiphe Makeleni and a conversion to take the lead 13-12. But again flyhalf Lukas stole the lead back, as FNB UFH scored a penalty to go ahead 14-13.

The men from FNB UFH had one last trick up their sleeves, with one minute to play was Mandaba that would make history for the FNB UFH team with a try to seal the deal as FNB UFH record their first victory in the 2016 Varsity Shield.

“It’s days like these that hard work pays, after all the punishing we have taken, a win like this has benefits that I can’t explain,” said FNB UFH coach Lumumba Currie. “Well done to my boys in showing character and after a week in hell, they still wanted to win, and where else to win than win at home if front of your home crowd, and more importantly, the Vice Chancelor, Dr Tom.”

FNB UFH defeated FNB TUT at Davidson Sports Stadium. Full-time score FNB UFH 18-14 FNB TUT.
