St.George Queensland Reds scrumhalf James Tuttle has put pen to paper on a new deal which will see him remain at Ballymore through 2019.

The 21-year-old last year established himself as the Reds’ starting scrumhalf before going on to help Bond University Queensland Country to its first National Rugby Championship title, while also leading the competition for points scoring.

Tuttle has started the first two games of the current Super Rugby season for the Reds, kicking three of the side’s six penalty goals in their win over the Brumbies at Suncorp Stadium last Friday.

Born and raised in Brisbane and schooled at St. Joseph’s Nudgee College, Tuttle said he was thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to represent his home state.

“Queensland is home and I love nothing more than putting the jersey on, working hard and representing those who have played in it before and playing for the proud people of our state,” he said.

“I’m really happy about the feeling in the squad. The guys care about each other and are working hard for each other.”

Although only 21, Tuttle has long been recognised as a leader among his peers, having captained the Australian Schoolboys, Australian Under 20s and Queensland Country in recent years.

Reds head coach Brad Thorn said: “I’ve worked with James for a few seasons now with the Under 20s, Queensland Country and the Reds. He’s an honest, hard working guy who is super competitive and cares about this place.

“He’s still quite young, but he has a senior role in the team so it is great to see him commit to Ballymore for another season as we continue to build.”

The Reds’ host their second home game of the 2018 Vodafone Super Rugby season this weekend when they take on the Bulls from Pretoria, South Africa at Suncorp Stadium this Saturday 10 March at 6:45pm. The event is a double header, with Queensland Women hosting NSW Women in the opening match of the inaugural Super W season at 4:00pm.
