Edinburgh have today confirmed the appointment of former player, Steve Lawrie, to the club’s coaching staff for next season.

Lawrie joins from Tennent’s Premiership side, Watsonian FC, where he has been Head Coach since the start of the 2018/19 season. The club was a successful applicant for the new Super 6 competition which begins next season, and Lawrie had been confirmed previously in the Head Coach role.

He will now take up the position of Assistant Forwards Coach in the summer, under the guidance of Head Coach Richard Cockerill.

On the new appointment, Cockerill said: “Steve is a good Edinburgh man and has worked really hard to achieve what he’s done in the club game. I’m looking forward to working with him next season and beyond and to seeing him continue his development as a top young Scottish coach.”

Before joining Watsonians in 2018, the talented coach assisted Phil Smith at Heriot’s for the previous five years and was a key figure in the Goldenacre outfit winning the league championship in 2015 and a league and cup double in 2016.

During former hooker’s professional playing career, he made 44 appearances for Edinburgh over two spells at the club. In between, he experienced two years in the English Championship with Doncaster. He represented Scotland at under-21, sevens and A level before earning a full international cap against Samoa in 2013.

Lawrie added: “I’m hugely excited by the opportunity to re-join Edinburgh as a member of the coaching staff and to work alongside Richard Cockerill and the rest of the on-field team.

“I’d like to thank George Watson’s College, Watsonians, Heriot’s and Scottish Rugby for supporting me in my development as a coach, and my family for their endless support. I can’t wait to get started.

“It’s an exciting time for the city to have a professional team challenging in the Heineken Champions Cup and Guinness PRO14, so I’m looking forward to earning the respect of the players and my colleagues and to contributing to the ongoing success of the club.”

As a result of the appointment, Watsonian FC will now conduct a thorough search for a new Head Coach ahead of the new Super 6 season.
