Highlanders have beaten the Lions in their Super 14 clash in Dunedin, despite a much-improved performance by the visitors on Friday.

The Highlanders won 39-29 after leading 22-17 at half-time.

The Highlanders scored three tries through lock Hayden Triggs, centre Kenny Lynn and were awarded a penalty try by referee Stuart Dickinson. Fullback Israel Dagg kicked six penalties and three conversions.

The Lions replied with five tries, scored by fullback Michael Killian, flank Cobus Grobbelaar, wing Wigan Pekeur (2) and replacement scrumhalf, JP Joubert. Flyhalf Carlos Spencer added a conversion, as did Earl Rose.

The Highlanders picked up four points for their efforts, while the Lions picked up a point for scoring four or more tries.
