Match: Border Bulldogs vs Steval Pumas

Tournament: Currie Cup Qualifier, round 4

Venue: Buffalo City Stadium, East London

Kick-off: 14:30, 30 April, 2016

MATCH REPORT:

EAST LONDON –It was a windy and cloudy East London for the fourth round of the interprovincial qualifying match between the Border Bulldogs and Steval Pumas.

There was an interesting twist to the match with the referee being late for the 15:00 kick-off, which resulted in the match only starting at 15:15.

From kick-off, the Steval Pumas made their intentions clear – they attacked fearlessly and kept the Bulldogs under pressure, but couldn’t break through their defence. It was a scoreless 15 minutes of the first half with both teams fighting for possession. It was the Bulldog’s Oliver Zono to put the first points on the scoreboard with a three pointer. Only a minute later, the Steval Pumas’ Justin van Staden missed a penalty into a strong wind.

The Pumas showed great patience and the speedster Marcello Sampson scored under the uprights with Van Staden adding two vital points for the half time score of 7-3 in favour of the Steval Pumas.

Five minutes into the second half, Van Staden opened the scoring with a penalty. Two minutes later his scrum half, Reynier van Rooyen was assisted from the pitch with a dislocated shoulder. This however didn’t have any impact on Van Staden’s kicking boot as he added another three points to the visitors. Tyler Fisher scored his try right in the middle of the half and Van Staden couldn’t convert. Minutes before the end of the match, Hennie Skorbinski crossed the try line, with Van Staden adding the additional points, to give the Pumas a convincing victory of 28-3 in East London.

Next week the Steval Pumas will host the Namibian Welwitschias at Ermelo High School. Kick-off is at 15:00 and tickets are available at the school and entrance gates to the sport ground. The day’s action however starts at 09:00 with the annual winter sport league derby between Ermelo High School and Piet Retief High. The first rugby teams will kick-off at 13:25.

Steval Pumas season tickets are R750 per person and Pumas Hospitality tickets are available at R1 450 per person. Tickets for the 20 August test match between the Springboks and Argentina at Mbombela Stadium are available now at Computicket. Enquiries:tjitjila@pumas.co.za
