Eddie Myners, head coach of SWD’s SA Rugby Under-20 Championship team, has been appointed to coach the SA Select Women’s team on their tour to England later this month.

Myners will be assisted by former KwaZulu-Natal Women’s Interprovincial head coach Lungisa Kama and Western Province’s Women’s Youth Training Centre (YTC) head coach Rodger Smith.

The SA Select Women will play two matches against the England Academy team and one against the British Army on their tour to the UK from 11 October to 25 October.

“I am delighted about the opportunity to coach the SA Select Women’s team and I am excited to work this great team of support staff,” said Myners. “We have no doubt that the tour is going to be challenging, but we are looking forward to the journey ahead and to growing and gelling as a unit.

“This is an enthusiastic bunch of players, who are keen to learn and to test themselves against international opposition, so this is an exciting time for us all.”

Myners has built up vast experience over the last 10 years, most of it at SWD, where he served as Currie Cup First Division forwards coach, SA Rugby Academy head coach, Under-19 and Under 21 head coach and Vodacom Cup head coach. He was also assistant coach to the SA Barbarians and SA President’s XV teams in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

Kama has been involved in the KwaZulu-Natal Women’s rugby structures for a number of years, while he also boasts international experience as a former SA U20 women’s assistant coach, which included tours to the USA and London in 2011 and 2013 respectively.

Smith, a former Springbok Sevens player, will also add value to the coaching team as a former Western Province Women’s Interprovincial Competition and Interprovincial Sevens coach, and more recently as an SA Rugby YTC coach, where he has worked with many of the players in the squad.

The assistant coaches joined the SA Select Women’s training squad at their camp in Stellenbosch over the weekend where they kicked off their preparations for the first women’s 15s international tour since the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup in France, while Myners joined the team on Monday.
