Phil de Glanville to join RFU Council

Loading...Former England captain Phil de Glanville will join the Rugby Football Union (RFU) Council as Student RFU representative.
Starting his rugby career at Durham and Oxford Universities, de Glanville went on to represent England at U21 level before joining Bath Rugby in 1989. He captained the West Country side to a league and cup double in 1996, playing for them 189 times over a 12-year period, including winning the European Cup in 1998.
He went on to make his England debut off the bench against the Springboks in 1992 and would face them again during the first tour to South Africa after apartheid, where he played in both Tests. He also featured in every match day squad during the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa.
In 1996 coach Jack Rowell appointed him captain and three years later, he featured in the 1999 Rugby World Cup, notably in the pool game against New Zealand. He won a total of 38 England caps and was ever-present in England’s match-day squads for seven years.
“I’m delighted to be joining the RFU Council,” said de Glanville.
“Rugby has been a significant part of my life both personally and professionally for over 25 years, and I’m hopeful that I will be able to share that experience for the benefit of others, particularly in the university sector.”
The former centre works for an executive search company based in Bristol and London and was a member of the South West’s Rugby World Cup 2015 legacy board.
