Wildeklawer Schools Rugby Tournament

On Saturday the 24th and Monday the 26th of April 2010 Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool from Pretoria hosted the 2nd Wildeklawer Super School Rugby Tournament.

Both days will be remembered for extremely wet and cold weather. But for even better rugby by the country’s top rugby schools.

All teams must be commended for their sportmanship, professionalism and respect for fellow players. After each match, the 2 teams coming off the field, would make a tunnel and cheer the 2 teams running onto the field for the next match.

None of the teams were dominated and each team showed why they deserved their invitation to this prestige tournament.

Day 1 Results:

Match 1

Florida from Johannesburg played against the Wildeklawer Barbarians who consisted of players from schools that missed out on an invitation to the tournament. Jeugland, Merensky and Transvalia all had numerous players in the squad.

Florida won a close and physical game 20 – 15. The Barbarians led 10 – 8 at half-time and can be very happy with their performance after spending only a few hours of training together.

Florida 20
Wildeklawer Barbarians 15
Man of the Match: #9 Wynand Venter – Barbarians

Match 2

EG Jansen from Boksburg played Framesby from Port Elizabeth.

EG Jansen dominated a struggling Framesby and eventually won 19 – 0 after leading 14 – 0 at half-time. Framesby struggled in the wet weather. And who can blame them with the extremely dry summer PE experienced this year.

EG Jansen 19
Framesby 0
Man of the Match: #8 Ruan Lerm – EG Jansen

Match 3

Boland Landbou from Paarl took on Waterkloof from Pretoria.

In a closely contested affair, Waterkloof came out top with a final score of 8 – 3. After leading 8 – 0 at half-time, Waterkloof’s defence held strong and Boland could only succeed with single penalty kick.

Waterkloof 8
Boland 3
Man of the Match: #1 Justin Forwood – Waterkloof

Match 4

A nice crowd gathered to watch Grey College from Bloemfontein against Paarl Gymnasium.

Grey College won 23 – 12 after a good second half performance saw them run more, and kick less. The first half was all Paarl Gym and they certainly rattled a Grey team, who kicked most of their possession away because of sustained pressure from Paarl Gym who led 12 – 7 at half-time.

Grey College 23
Paarl Gymnasium 12
Man of the Match: #7 Henco Venter – Grey College

Match 5

Diamantveld from Kimberley came up against HTS Middelburg.

A match dominated by handling errors and aimless kicking from both teams, finished in a 3 – 3 draw. Half-time score 0 – 0.

Diamantveld 3
HTS Middelburg 3
Man of the Match: #9 Dillon Smit – HTS Middelburg

Match 6

Paarl Boishaai against Glenwood from Durban.

Glenwood was kept in the match by countless errors and poor execution from Boishaai. Boishaai won the game 11 – 9 after scoring just before full-time from a quick penalty tap. Glenwood lead 3 – 0 at half-time.

Paarl Boishaai 11
Glenwood 9
Man of the Match: #7 Wayne Dalton – Glenwood

Match 7

Monument from Krugersdorp against Outeniqua from George.

Outeniqua’s defence held strong in the first half, but Monument kept pounding away with their massive forward pack to win 25 – 6 after leading 11- 6 half-time.

Monument 25
Outeniqua 6
Man of the Match: #6 Stefan Nel – Monument

Match 8

A capacity crowd gathered for the feature match of the day. Hosts Affies took on Paul Roos Gymnasium from Stellebosch.

Affies proved much too strong in front of a home crowd and won 18 – 6 after leading 8 – 3 at half-time. Affies showed great handling on a deteriorating playing field to score all points through the backline.

Affies 18
Paul Roos 6
Man of the Match: #10 Warren Gilbert – Affies

Day 2 Results

Rain stayed away for most of the second day and this gave the teams some confidence to throw the ball wide. A great day of running rugby and spectacular tries.

Match 1

Diamantveld vs Glenwood.

Glenwood defended brilliantly and made most of their opportunities to win 17 – 5. They led 10 – 0 at half-time and Diamantveld could only get a consolation try right at the end.

Glenwood 17
Diamantveld 5
Man of the Match: #5 Alwyn Janse van Vuuren – Glenwood

Match 2

Waterkloof vs Framesby

Framesby’s bad form continued and Waterkloof capatilised by scoring 8 tries and winning 53 – 10. Framesby would have thought they still had a chance after trailing 20 – 10 half-time, but great play by the Waterkloof backs immediately after half-time ensured a record win for Waterkloof.

Waterkloof 53
Framesby 10
Man of the Match: #15 Sean Robinson – Waterkloof

Match 3

Boland Landbou vs HTS Middelburg

Boland Landbou fought back hard in the second half to win 20 – 11. They trailed 8 – 6 at half-time but after hard words from the coaches, got their game together.

Boland Landbou 20
HTS Middelburg 11
Man of the Match: #9 Gerhard Jordaan from Boland Landbou

Match 4

Grey College vs Outeniqua

Probably the most balanced performance by any team over the tournament. Grey won 45 – 6 after leading 19 – 6 half-time. Great defence and lots of turn-overs from the Grey loosies meant the backline could throw caution to the wind. Class performance from Grey # 10 Johan Goosen, scoring 25 of the team’s points with a try, 4 penalties and 4 conversions. Expect to hear that name for years to come.

Grey College 45
Outeniqua 6
Man of the Match: #10 Johan Goosen – Grey College

Match 5

Paarl Gymnasium vs Monument

After a good showing against Grey, Paarl Gym built on that performance and went on to beat Monument 30 – 16. They already led 22 – 13 at half-time and Monument never looked like winning against a very good Paarl Gym side. Try of the tournament scored by #11 Conrad Loubser from Paarl Gym. He took a ball at pace out wide and after a great inside outside step to beat the Monument cover defence, he dove over in the corner.

Paarl Gymansium 30
Monument 16
Man of the Match: #15 Jacques Botha – Paarl Gym

Match 6

Paul Roos vs EG Jansen

Paul Roos was clear favourites and won 37 – 27, but not easily. EG Jansen never backed down and matched Paul Roos in every aspect of the game. Only their discipline let them down and in the end cost them the game. 3 Yellow cards for EG Jansen and 1 for Paul Roos. Half-time score 19 – 8.

Paul Roos 37
EG Jansen 27
Man of the Match: #8 Braam Steyn – Paul Roos

Match 7

Another capacity crowd in for Affies vs Paarl Boishaai.

A great first half performance by Affies saw them lead 8 – 3 at half-time, but they failed to replicate that in the second half and was beaten 13 – 8 by a Paarl Boishaai side that never stopped believing. 3 Yellow cards for Affies didn’t help their cause either and discipline is certainly an aspect of their game they will be working on in weeks to come.

Paarl Boishaai 13
Affies 8
Man of the Match: #6 Jaycee Jooste – Paarl Boishaai

Match 8

Wildeklawer Barbarian vs Pretoria Boys High

The Barbarians fought back in the second half to beat Boys High 13 -12 with a penalty right on the hooter.
Boys High led 7 – 0 half-time.

Barbarians 13
Pretoria Boys High 12
Man of the Match: #7 Stefans de Wit – Barbarians.
