The SA Select Women will battle it out with the Scion Sirens in the Plate Semi-final of the Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday after going down against the USA Select 7s and Canada Maple Leafs in the second round of the tournament.

The SA Select Women started the second day’s play on Friday on a disappointing note as they went down 22-0 against hosts, the USA Select 7s.

The hosts delivered an effective attacking display, which tested the SA Select Women’s defensive system throughout the match.

The defeat marked their first of the tournament, as they registered confidence-boosting 12-5 and 46-0 victories against the Brazil Women’s 7s and mixed international team, Stars Rugby 2, respectively on Thursday.

Despite the defeat, captain Lorinda Brown’s team booked their place in the Cup Semi-final against the Canada Maple Leafs in the early hours of Saturday morning, and their best efforts again fell short as they suffered a heart-breaking 12-10 defeat in a hard-fought match.

The Plate, Bowl and Shield Semi-finals and finals will be contested on Saturday, while the Cup Semi-finals and final will be played on Sunday.

SA Select Women day-two results:

SA Select 0 – 22 USA Select 7s

SA Select 10 – 12 Maple Leafs (Cup Quarter-final)

SA Select Women day-three fixtures, Saturday 5 March:
