An innovative half a rugby ball has paired up with online fitness and health supplement partners to help feed one hundred families in need during the Covid-19 crisis. Backed by Springbok players and dubbed “Rise to the Challenge”, a percentage of all package sales will go towards the NPO SA Cares For Life.

The ShadowBall is a unique South African invention ball that rebounds off any wall enabling solo rugby training. Despite not being able to operate during the national lockdown, the company founder, Gary Crookes, wanted to help those struggling during the pandemic. “As ShadowBall we cannot sit aside when so many people are in need, so we decided to rally our industry friends and try to do something that will really benefit all parties involved,” he says.

Teaming up with home learning fitness company, Amaven SA, and quality pharma brand, Viralmed, ShadowBall is offering an immune and skills boosting combo pack via their online store that delivers a ShadowBall, an online home training programme and vitamin C tablets.

Besides raising funds, the ShadowBall Challenge is a great way for any child or rugby enthusiast to keep boredom at bay, improve their skills and stay healthy. Springbok Captain Siya Kolisi has taken the challenge, as well as Blitzbok Captain Siviwe ‘Shakes’ Soyizwapi, and other well known Springboks such as Jesse Kriel and Scarra Ntubnei. The challenge has even gone global with Japanese rugby all-stars joining in.

The charitable goal of the Rise to the Challenge drive is to raise R80,000 to feed 100 families for one month. It costs approximately R200 to feed a family for a week and the aim is to provide these families with weekly food parcels consisting of items such as maize meal, sugar, flour, oil, salt, tea and soya mince.

“This initiative aims to focus on children’s rights and to support those who are working tirelessly to ensure that these rights are met in the communities,” says Crookes. “This challenge is trying to help ordinary citizens contribute to those less fortunate than them, and to enable South Africans to stand together and strive for children’s freedom, health and security.”

ShadowBall is scientifically proven to increase passing and catching accuracy by as much as 266% in just four weeks and offers players a solid way to keep their skills and fitness in check. Once the combo pack is purchased, players can sign up and have free access to the five week skills training program for three months. Anyone who already owns a ShadowBall can also enter the challenge and see how their skills rank against the pro’s and win prizes.
