WHILE there were some close matches, Eastern Province clubs made the perfect start to the Eastern Cape Super 12 club rugby competition when all six teams emerged with wins in Saturday’s opening round.

One of the most significant results was Gardens’ 13-5 win over defending champions East London Police, a score which indicates the Uitenhage side’s determination to figure in the final reckoning this season.

In the other pool B game, Grahamstown Brumbies laid down a marker with a solid 27-12 win over Buffalos in Grahamstown, scoring four tries for a bonus point victory.

The closest results came in pool C where Park and Alexandria outfit Trying Stars both registered one-point victories. Park overcame wet weather to edge home team Walter Sisulu University 18-17, while Trying Stars held on for a 33-32 triumph over a game Breakers team in Alex.

Progress sent a message to their opponents with a 77-0 thrashing of Winter Rose in Uitenhage, while Spring Rose won an important away fixture against Berlin Tigers 22-12.

Pool B: Gardens 13 EL Police 5, Brumbies 27 Buffalos 12

Pool C: Walter Sisulu Univ 17 Park 18, Trying Stars 33 Breakers 32
