Varsity Sports is proud to announce the addition of three new universities, who will join the existing 16 universities involved across the various Varsity Sports sporting codes and competitions.

The University of Mpumalanga, Mangosuthu University of Technology and University of Zululand have all joined Varsity Sports as of 2016.

“The addition of new member universities is one of the most celebrated highlights at the University Sport Company (USC),” said Flip van Zyl, CEO of the University Sport Company.

“Currently, we have 73% representation of public universities, which are members of the USC and are able to participate in the Varsity Sports tournaments (pending their qualification at USSA). This is a clear indication that the interest in Varsity Sports has, and continues, to grow.”

Dr Paul Maminza, Head of Students of the University of Mpumalanga, is enthusiastic about the university’s inclusion in future Varsity Sports events.

“UMP, although being a new university, has a vibrant group of students,” said Maminza. “We are so excited about our association with USC and Varsity Sports, for our possible participation in the Varsity Sports tournaments.

“The Varsity Sports competitions provide a platform for our students to participate in sports and compete with fellow students from other participating universities. We have already affiliated to Universities Sports South Africa (USSA) for soccer, netball, volleyball and athletics.

“Being a new University implies that we bring new sporting ways to the tournament. Watch this space. Here comes UMP!”

The addition of UMP, MUT and UZ brings the total number of participating universities across the Varsity Sports sporting codes and platforms to 19.
