After three warm-up games, the Steval Pumas are looking forward to showing their big match temperament in their first SuperSport Rugby Challenge match against the Vodacom Blue Bulls this weekend. The Mpumalanga side will head to Loftus Versfeld to test their mettle against strong opposition in the Bulls.

The last warm-up match against the Cell C Sharks resulted in a 50 – 19 victory for the Durbanites but gave the Steval Pumas a valuable opportunity to experience first-hand the impact of what type of game plan can secure victory in the SuperSport Challenge.

Steval Pumas coach Brent Janse van Rensburg today announced the squad for the match, picked after testing various combinations during the warm-up games. He said that the focus of the upcoming game will be on kicking at the right times, the right type of kick and choose when to run at the opposition.

“We need to get the basics right, get the set piece to work, get the game management right and be more resilient on soft moments defensively. On other occasions when we should have run, we decided to kick. I think the appreciation for when to run and when to kick, and what type of kick you use, is important,” said Janse van Rensburg.

Janse van Rensburg reiterated the importance of winning set pieces.

“We’ve got to have a bigger, better focus on the turnover ball and securing our own set pieces, as the Bulls are very strong in that area. We need to immediately get into that defensive mode and be able to transfer our mindset quickly depending on whether we have the ball or we don’t,” Janse van Rensburg said.

He added that line speed will be a specific focus to put the Vodacom Blue Bulls under pressure.

“We will need to control our line speed well, but at the same time make sure that we recover if they play us in the wider channels,14:30 pm.” said Janse van Rensburg.
