Who are the key Springbok players? We need not look further that the latest contracts to be rewarded to 10 of our Springbok rugby players. These are the player regarded as key to World Cup success in 2011.

It has been revealed on Sunday that Captain John Smit, Bakkies Botha, Victor Matfield, Schalk Burger, Juan Smith, Pierre Spies, Fourie du Preez, Bryan Habana, Jaque Fourie and JP Pietersen have all signed two-year contracts with SA Rugby.

Nine other players have been offered one-year contracts. They are Tendai Mtawarira, Bismarck du Plessis, Andries Bekker, Heinrich Brüssow, Danie Rossouw, Ruan Pienaar, Morné Steyn, Wynand Olivier and Adrian Jacobs.

Hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle is also in SA Rugby’s plans, but his contract will be subject to passing a fitness test.

By rewarding only these players with contracts the Super 14 will become even more important! Strong performances will be required for inclusion in the Springbok squad as fewer players are “guaranteed” a Springbok jersey!
