When the Toyota Free State Cheetahs tackle the Xerox Golden Lions in a Currie Cup clash in Bloemfontein this weekend their fight on the field will be symbolic of something much larger and, for most people, much closer to home: the fight against cancer. The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is the charity of choice of the Toyota Free State Cheetahs as part of a two-year strategic partnership agreement signed earlier this year.

This Saturday’s match (26 August 2017) will be the Toyota Free State Cheetahs’ ‘pink’ game in solidarity with CANSA. Trees in and around the stadium will be covered in pink and staff and volunteers of CANSA will supply free sunscreen to spectators and support staff as part of the awareness campaign. CANSA will also operate a stall at gate 5 (opposite Loch Logan) where various items will be for sale to raise funds for CANSA’s care and support programmes. To commemorate the occasion and as a show of appreciation, the teams will play for a special ‘CANSA Pink’ trophy, presented by CANSA.

“Both CANSA and the Cheetahs are characterised by a strong survival instinct. Saturday’s match will be a reminder for fans of both teams that the fight against cancer is one in which we all take part,” says Elize Joubert, CANSA’s CEO.

The Toyota Free State Cheetahs are equally excited about the event. “In CANSA we recognise that which we value in the Cheetahs as well: A fighting spirit against all odds. We proud to be associated with CANSA as both organisations are community-minded and focused on not only achieving success but knowing that success lies in helping others along the way,” says Harold Verster, CEO of the Toyota Free State Cheetahs.
