Cherry and Green rested for USA exhibition series

Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens coach Tim Walsh will take a near full-strength side to Las Vegas next weekend for their final hitout before the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

The defending Olympic Gold Medalists will take on USA in a five-game exhibition series in a format that will mirror what the squad will face on the Gold Coast in April.

Walsh’s side will play two games on day one and then again on day two before running out for just the final on day three.

USA are currently fifth in the HSBC Sevens World Series standings and faced Australia in the Dubai Cup Final in December last year.

Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens coach Tim Walsh said: “This is an ideal preparation for the Commonwealth Games. USA are a very well coached side and showed they can match it with the best after knocking off New Zealand in the Cup Quarter-Final in Dubai.

“It’s a slightly different format to what we played in Sydney and one game shorter than what we normally face on the World Series circuit so that provides its challenges, so it’s important that we get the chance to feel familiar with it.

“Emilee and Ellia are just being managed at the moment to make sure they are hitting their straps come April but it’s also a chance for Page and Demi as well as Lauren and Lily to show what they’ve got and push for a Commonwealth Games berth too,” Walsh said.
