Women’s Finals to hit East London on Saturday

Loading...The SA Rugby Women’s Interprovincial Competition is set for an exciting finish this weekend in East London where Border and Western Province will battle it out for the title as A Section champions, while the Golden Lions and Free State will go head-to-head in the B Section final.
Three finals will be hosted on Saturday at the BCM Stadium, where the winners of the Northern and Southern sections of the Under-18 Women’s Youth Training Centre tournaments hosted in August, Western Province and the Limpopo Blue Bulls, will line up against each other in the opening match of the day.
Border will be determined to stretch their winning run to four consecutive A Section titles on Saturday after a solid season in which they won four of their five pool matches. Free State, meanwhile, will appear in their second successive B Section Final. They defeated the Leopards 22-5 last season.
The clash between Border and Western Province is expected to be gripping as the teams have had an intense rivalry over the years, which will be fuelled by the fact that Western Province dealt Border their first defeat in three seasons in the pool rounds earlier this year. The clash came down to the wire, but a successful conversion by Western Province was the difference on the scoreboard, as they won 7-5.
Both teams have been solid on defence this season as they have leaked only three tries a piece, but Border’s attack has been superior with an impressive 30 tries in their five pool matches to only 14 by the Capetonians. This match will also mark a repeat of the 2013 A Section Final, which Border won 41-8.
One of South Africa’s leading female referees, Aimee Barrett, who recently returned from the Rio Olympic Games where she was one of 12 referees who officiated the Women’s Sevens tournament, will take charge of the A Section final.
The clash between the Golden Lions and Free State will be equally exciting as both sides will enter the match unbeaten following superb seasons. The Free Staters won all three of their round-robin matches with bonus points, while the Johannesburg outfit won three of their four matches with a full-house of points, which will set the scene for an exciting clash.
Free State have been particularly effective on attack this season with the side cruising to 38 tries in three matches with only five scored against them, while the Golden Lions scored 22 tries in their four matches and conceded nine.
