Border Women hunt fifth successive title
Border will be hunting an impressive fifth successive Women’s Interprovincial title on Saturday when they meet Western Province in a repeat of last year’s final at the BCM Stadium in East London.
The team secured a record fifth successive home final two weeks ago with a rewarding 78-7 victory against Free State, which saw them finish the season unbeaten. The victory marked their eighth in a row after winning their last three matches last season – which they will be determined to build on this weekend.
The teams have met in the final twice in the last three years, with Border winning 29-16 last season and 41-8 in the 2013 final.
Western Province, however, hold the bragging rights as the most successful side to face Border in the last few seasons, with victories in East London in 2016, 2012 and 2011, while they also defeated the defending champions in Cape Town in 2013 and 2010.
These results combined with the fact that the teams have been closely matched on attack and defence this season, with Border scoring 33 tries and leaking eight while Western Province have scored 34 and conceded seven, will undoubtedly boost their confidence going into the match.
This final will be preceded by the B Section final between the Golden Lions and SWD, who both finished the pool stages of the competition with a full house of points after three bonus-point victories.
The Golden Lions have been superior on attack throughout the season with 36 tries in three matches, while they leaked three, compared to 14 tries by SWD and seven against them. However, with a title at stake, both teams will be up for the challenge.
