Players’ Fund receives welcome donation from SARRA
The Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund recently received a welcome shot in the arm when the 15 provincial societies that make up the SA Rugby Referees Association (SARRA) agreed to donate R5,000 each to the Fund, totalling a R75,000 donation, which will assist the Fund in its important work.
The Players’ Fund is a South African non-profit organization that serves as the official safety net for rugby players who sustain catastrophic, life-changing head, neck, or spinal injuries while playing the game.
A delighted Annie Dobson, CEO of the Players’ Fund, said they are deeply touched by the generosity of the referee societies’ support for the Fund.
“We are thrilled at the unwavering support and generosity of our refs, following the SARRA Council meeting held earlier this month,” said Dobson.
“The 15 referee societies unanimously committed to donating R5,000 each to the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund – a collective contribution of R75,000.
“This generous decision confirms the commitment to the Fund’s vital role in supporting catastrophically injured players and highlighted the powerful part referees play, both in preventing serious injuries and in responding when they occur.
“This contribution is a meaningful demonstration of referees standing shoulder to shoulder with their rugby community,” she added.
The Players’ Fund, often called “Rugby’s Caring Hands,” provides comprehensive, long-term support to both players and their families to help them adapt to a “new normal.”
Founded in 1980 after the tragic death of Western Province player Chris Burger, and later incorporating the legacy of schoolboy player Petro Jackson, the Fund ensures that injured players are never forgotten by the rugby community, supporting them indefinitely.
