The Coca-Cola under-16 Grant Khomo Week players on Tuesday night received valuable tips on what it takes to reach the top in South African rugby in a workshop hosted by SARU’s Development department.

The workshop educated the teams about what selectors look for specifically when identifying the top players and the advantages of proper conditioning in player development. They also received detailed training programmes to assist them in reaching their potential.

The players were also treated to a DVD illustrating what the 50 players who will be invited to the Under-16 High Performance camp in Cape Town during the September school holidays will experience.

A group of 60 players will be selected as part of the under-16 High Performance squad following the completion of the tournament, with the best 50 invited to the training camp where they will be exposed to professional coaches and training drills. The best players from this group will be included in the under-16 elite squad with the objective of nurturing them to ensure they progress to through the ranks to senior level.

This player identification process started at the opening day of the Coca-Cola Under-16 Grant Khomo Week on Monday where SARU Convener of national selectors Peter Jooste headed up a selection committee to scout the best players. Their performances were discussed in detail at the end of each day’s play in line with their objective to find the most talented players. This process will continue on the final day’s play on Thursday.

“We are pleased with the talent we have seen at this year’s tournament,” Jooste said. “There are more than enough players to select in each position, so the tough part is going to be to decide which players to choose for the camp. It is certainly an encouraging scenario for us.”
