Try, and try again was the motto of this weekend’s Vodacom Super Rugby as no less than four South African players scored a brace of tries each while the Hurricanes’ Julian Savea topped the try-scoring rankings with a hat-trick to his name.

Making full use of the lifeline he received from the Vodacom Bulls, fullback SP Marais scored two tries in his first start for the Pretoria side with the side’s flyer Jamba Ulengo also crossing the whitewash on two occasions.

DHL Stormers flanker Sikhumbuzo Notshe was in equally devastating form in his side’s 46-19 rout of the visiting Sunwolves in Cape Town while South African livewire Riaan Viljoen scored the Japanese franchise’s only two tries.

South African players once again feature prominently on the statistics taken from the All Out Rugby App with Stormers pivot Jean-Luc du Plessis leading the Points category.

Du Plessis, the son of former Springbok legend Carel, made a dream start for the Stormers scoring 16 of his side’s points which included a try in the 78th minute to seal the victory.

Savea’s three tries earned him a spot in second place which he shares with the Highlanders’ Lima Sopoaga and team-mate Beauden Barrett with the trio scoring 15 points for their sides respectively.

Emirates Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies played a pivotal role in his team’s 24-9 victory over the Cell C Sharks to top the second Africa conference with a contribution of 14 points.

Joining the leading players in the Clean Breaks category showing off his attacking prowess featuring 13 other players over the weekend that made three each.

The Reds’ Samu Kerevi leads with five clean breaks while Lionel Mapoe (Lions), Lwazi Mvovo (Sharks) and Johnny Kotze (Stormers) share third spot with Du Plessis with three apiece.

Marais ended the weekend third in terms of Metres Run with 109 metres from 16 Carries which placed him second in that category along with Serevi and Derek Carpenter of the Sunwolves.

The Kings’ Stefan Watermeyer, Damian McKenzie (Chiefs), Johnny McNicholl (Crusaders) and Ben Volavola (Crusaders) share third spot with 14 Carries each.

With six Offloads, Marais topped the category with the Highlanders’ Patrick Osborne following shortly behind him with five.

Vodacom Bulls lock Jason Jenkins topped the Tackles stats with the Force’s Matt Hodgson with both players executing 17 in their respective matches.

Making his return to the field, Bulls flanker Lappies Labuschagne was equally valuable in defence with 16 while Paul Jordaan (Sharks) and Andries Ferreira (Lions) share fourth place with 14 tackles apiece.
