Paul Roos got the 2016 Mutual and Federal Inter-schools off to a winning start with a 36-21 win over Grey High on Saturday.

The home team dominated proceedings for most of the match but had to dig deep to withstand a second half onslaught from the PE side.

Live-wire Paul Roos flanker, Hanré du Toit, was first to cross the try line in the ninth minute after sustained pressure by the home side.

Captain, Damian Willemse, made no mistake with the boot taking his side to 7-0.

Grey closed the gap 10 minutes later through a Josiah Boafu try after some free flowing running rugby sparked by SA Schools eighth man, Kwezi Mafu. Flyhalf, Lubabalo Dobela, slotted the conversion to level the scores.

Paul Roos hooker, Daneel Steinman crashed over the whitewash a few minutes later after a strong lineout drive to regain the lead but Willemse’s conversion was unsuccessful.

Grey High took the lead for the first time in the match when flyhalf Lubabalo Dobela stepped his way to a seven pointer.

The Stellenbosch side hit straight back with a try by their centre Lyle Hendricks after a brilliant offload by their captain Willemse.

The flyhalf then added to his tally with a drop goal and went on to win the man of the match for his performance.

Hanré du Toit got his second try of the game in the dying minutes of the first half when he muscled over form another strong a lineout drive.

Willemse conversion gave Paul Roos a 29-14 lead at the break.

The visitors got just the start they wanted to the second half as Ayabonga Matroos got his first try of the match. Dobela slotted the conversion.

However, a moment of madness ensued which saw both teams lose a player.

Matroos was yellow carded for an incident and Paul Roos winger David-Lee Moses was shown a red card when he retaliated with a fist to the face.

Despite being a man down, the side from the Cape managed to add to their score with seven minutes to go. Hard working lock Phillip van Dyk crashed over for a five pointer after a botched Grey line out. Willemse succeeded with another conversion taking the final score to 36 – 21.
