Golden Lions u18 Flyhalf Jaco van der Walt

Golden Lions Under-18 flyhalf Jaco van der Walt kicked a last-minute penalty to hand his team a thrilling 19-18 victory against the KwaZulu Natal U18s in the final match of day four of the 2011 Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week in Kimberley.

The Hoërskool Monument pivot who also earned the man of the match award for his superb overall performance was also responsible for 14 of the Johannesburg team’s points. Fullback Justin Moos scored the other points of the Golden Lions after he brilliantly ran in a 65-meter individual try.

The Young Sharks though managed to score two tries which were scored by the talented fullback Siyabonga Tom and the physical centre Tyler Fisher. Both Tom and Fisher have been two of the star backline performers during this week’s Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week in Kimberley. Tom’s five-pointer was scored during the opening five minutes of the match, while Fisher crashed over the try line after brushing aside three Golden Lions defenders.

Tom kicked two penalties and converted Fisher’s try. The Golden Lions dominated the breakdown and were superior at scrum-time and in the line-outs. The Sharks were guilty of conceding numerous handling errors during crucial periods of the game. In the other matches of the day, the DHL Western Province U18s earned their first victory at the 2011 Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week following their 42-26 win over the Border Bulldogs. Ten tries were scored in this match with the Cape team running in six five-pointers.

The Bishops pivot Swiel, kicked two penalties and three conversions during his first match at the 2011 tournament. The Border Bulldogs U18s managed to score four tries, two of which were added by Siphumelele Msutwana while their other five-pointers were scored by Siphesihle Punguzwa and Dylan de Wilzen. Joshua Stander kicked one conversion.

The Griffons maintained their undefeated run in this year’s Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week following their 31-16 win victory against Eastern Province. The provincial Under-18 team of Welkom only conceded one try during this match when centre Jean Pittaway crossed the try line for the Eastern Province team. His five-pointer was converted by Selvyn Davids who also kicked three penalties. Brendan October, Jacobus Enslin, Kallie Erasmus and Kirsten Heyns were the try-scorers for the Griffons. Kallie Erasmus kicked one conversion, as did Jacobus Enslin who also added one penalty.

The Limpopo Blue Bulls bounced back to winning ways following their defeat against the Griffons on Tuesday and convincingly defeated the Zimbabwe 81-7.
