GWK Griquas wing Bjorn BassonXerox Lions coach John Mitchell and GWK Griquas winger Bjorn Basson on Thursday received the Absa Currie Cup Coach and Player of the Month awards for September at ceremonies held in Johannesburg and Kimberley.
Mitchell’s side are currently in fifth position on the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division log with 35 points. They conceded four defeats during their first five games in the 2010 competition, but have recently recorded six victories from their last seven matches. They have won their last five home games at Coca-Cola Park by defeating The Sharks, Vodacom Western Province, Vodacom Free State Cheetahs, GWK Griquas and the Platinum, Leopards.
“It is good to be recognised and to receive the Absa Currie Cup Coach of the Month award for this month,” said Mitchell.

The Absa Currie Cup Coach and Player of the Month competition, rewards players who consistently performed during each month of South Africa’s domestic competition. Coaches are also honoured on a monthly basis for their contribution to their team’s consistent performances.

Previous winners in the category of Absa Currie Cup Coach of the Month this season were Vodacom Western Province’s Allister Coetzee (July) and The Sharks’ John Plumtree (August).

Basson joins Vodacom WP No 8 Vermeulen (August) and The Sharks flyhalf Patrick Lambie (July) as winners of the Absa Currie Cup Player of the Month award. The GWK Griquas winger is currently the leading try-scorer in the 2010 competition with 17 and is two five-pointers away from equaling Absa Currie Cup try-scoring record of 19 held by former Western Province winger Carel du Plessis (1989) and Platinum Leopards’ Colin Lloyd (2006).
